The Di-Versity Heritage Quilt Group usually has about 12 members, however, this year we have 23 members from as near as Salmon Arm and as far afield as Barriere, including Sorrento, Pritchard and Kamloops. The Heritage group is keenly interested in women’s history, quilts of the times, women’s lifestyle and history of the times, which influenced family life and women‘s work.
One nice summer day in 2010 the Di-Veristy Heritage Quilt Group visited Haney Heritage Village and were served a lovely lunch. When the idea of the group having a quilt show was discussed, the first location they thought of was Haney Heritage Village, as it is a perfect setting for the reproduction heritage quilts to be displayed. The quilt show gave us a much needed deadline for some of the group to finish their quilts. Quilters’ always have pieced quilt tops that are in need of sandwiching, quilting and binding, to become an actual quilt.
Many of the quilts that will be on display on Saturday, June 9th, were created in the style and colouring of quilts circa 1800 to 1900. Today there are many, many fabrics with heritage prints, colour and style, available for us to make reproductions quilts. Plus, there are licensed fabrics reprinted to make actual reproduction quilts, and patterns provided by the fabric designers or dedicated quilters who collect vintage and antique quilts. Some of us have chosen to re-make a quilt using a colour or black & white photo as a guide; sometimes the photos will have a finished quilt size, but most often there are no measurements to work from. Other quilts, upon researching, can be found in Museums around the world - due to computer access we are able to search web-sites of museums around the world and view their collections.
We are fortunate to live in an era of automatic dishwashers, washing machines and dryers….This allows women more free hours to pursue the passion of quilting…but sometimes the laundry sits and waits as I’m busy working on another quilt.
The Shuswap Needle Arts Guild has been invited to display the needlework of reproduction samplers and old masters done in thread.
This quilt show gives the Salmon Arm Museum the opportunity to display the museum’s quilt collection which will be on display in the R.J. Haney House for the 2012 season.
Be sure to drop by and view this one day quilting show on Saturday June 9th from 10:00am-7:00pm at RJ Haney Heritage Village 751-HWY 97B. Admission is $5.00. Marjorie’s Tea Room will be serving a special Quilters Pancake Breakfast and Lunch Special.
